Psychometric Assessments

Psychometric Assessments

Psychometric assessment measures various abilities or characteristics in an individual. This includes cognitive skills (verbal reasoning, visual-spatial skills, fluid reasoning, working memory, processing speed), academic skills (listening comprehension, oral expression, reading, maths, written expression) and attention/concentration.

We recognise that taking this first step in assessment is a big decision, and we aim to support you through the process from end to end.

At CCFP, we will always empower you to be able to make informed decisions about the assessment process and to make the best decision for you and your family.

Types of Psychometric Assessment

Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC)

Assesses a child’s strengths and weaknesses in verbal and non-verbal problem-solving, working memory, and processing speed.  This assessment indicates academic potential within the current schooling structure and identifies areas of difficulty or where a child might excel.  This assessment also helps with the diagnosis of specific learning difficulties. This assessment is appropriate for individuals aged 6 – 16 yrs.

Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS)

What to Expect

We take the following approach to ensure we have a full understanding of what is going on for you or your child:

01. Initial Assessment

The first step once you have a referral from your GP or paediatrician is a meeting with a clinician to discuss the reasons for the referral. The initial meeting will determine appropriate assessments for you or your child and any future steps.  Before your appointment, you may be asked to bring previous assessments, school reports, and behavioural observations from a teacher.

02. Face to Face Testing

Once a plan is in place and mutually agreed upon, standardised testing will be administered. Testing time varies depending on the individual needs.  We continually assess factors like motivation, alertness, concentration, and mood to measure abilities accurately.  We may recommend testing over multiple days if we feel it’s necessary.  This will be discussed in the initial consultation.

03. External Questionnaires

Depending on the age and abilities of the individual, we may require information from an external source to create a comprehensive assessment.  Sometimes, we ask parents, carers, or teachers to complete a questionnaire.  This step will be determined in the initial consultation and is only necessary sometimes.

04. Assessment Findings and Recommendations

Once all assessments are complete, the clinical will review the assessments and other information and prepare a report. You and your clinician will determine a mutually suitable time to review the report and discuss the findings, plus any recommendations. Your report will contain a detailed overview of the results and individually tailored recommendations in an easy-to-read format.
